In parallel to his research activity Dr. Bonifacio is also interested in the development of teaching tools for blind and visually impared students. In 2012 he published an audio version of the Periodic Table of the Elements. This work was highlighted in Portuguese TV show “Com Ciência” (RTP 2). In this program he talks about the QR-coded audio periodic table of the elements and its impact on teaching chemistry to blinds using a mobile-learning platform. This work was also highlighted in the Commemorative Session of the 35th anniversary of FCT – Universidade Nova de Lisboa (relevant scientific achievements of FCT researchers in 2012).

Dr. Bonifacio is also part of a team at FCT/UNL that developed the software NavMol. This software was one of the outcomes of the ICT Project and is a molecular editor for blind and visually impaired. Users can interact with the program via the keyboard and text-to-speech software, or Braille hardware. NavMol enables the user to navigate the molecules atom-by-atom, providing information about neighbors of each atom and bond types. It also allows structures to be changed by adding or deleting atoms and bonds. Information about Navmol 2.0 can be found in the Molinsight web portal.

Publications in Chemical Education:

In 2012 Dr. Bonifacio participated in the edition of an academic version of the Periodic Table of the Elements in Portuguese (revision and pre-print work), and also published a new audio version of the periodioc Table of the Elements. The audio QR-coded Periodic Table of the Elements is exposed in the Chemistry Department hall at FCT/UNL.

  • Organization and participation in the activities of the Science and Technology Week under the project “Ciência Viva” promoted by the Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation and ITQB/UNL (organizing team 1999-2001).

  • Organization and participation in the activities of the Chemistry Day promoted by the Chemistry Department of FCT/UNL (organizing team 2002-2005).

  • Participation in the Expo FCT. In 2010 and 2011 a special activity was presented to the visiting students: Detection of the equivalence point of a strong acid-base reaction by olfactory titration [Poster] [Protocol]. The experience was specially designed (in collaboration with Dr. Florbela Pereira) to be used in a chemistry teaching lab by blind/visually impaired students. The activity poster was also presented in braille. An audio QR-coded Periodic Table was also presented to the visitors.

  • Promotion of green chemistry research activities. The scientific magazine "Super Interessante" published the article “Quimica Verde - Novo Paradigma Industrial” (number 165, january 2012), which is totally dedicated to the advances in green chemistry in Portugal. In the article, Dr. Bonifacio talks about the advantages of using supercritical carbon dioxide as an alternative solvent and his project Just in Time Dendrimers. Read the article here (in portuguese).

  • Science communication using internet. A website containing all the information available regarding the H5N1 and H1N1 outbreak was especially developed to inform the community.
